Bruce “Arch” Archibald says this will be a rebuilding year, as he lost 5 seniors to graduation. The Bears varsity boys’ golf coach and math teacher is in his 34th year as a Blake School teacher and coach, and 32nd in the golf program. Coach Archibald is hoping the four players returning have all improved their games. Two of the returning players are seniors and captains, Eric Bjerke and Drew Brown. Eric returned to Blake last year after two years playing for Bloomington Jefferson. Eric played in the state tournament for Blake as an 8th grader before leaving Blake. Drew was an All-Conference Honorable Mention player his sophomore and junior years. Also returning are senior Steven Zwick and junior B. J. Wangensteen, who both played in many of last years varsity matches.
Seventeen other athletes have joined these returning players this spring to attempt to make the varsity boys golf team. Of the 21 candidates, 9 will make the varsity squad and the remainder will comprise the JV. Head coach Bruce Archibald who was the 2001 Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Boys’ Class A Golf Coach of the Year will be assisted by John Hamre, the varsity Hockey coach as the boys JV golf coach. The varsity will call Minikahda their home course and the JV will have Woodhill as their home course
The Blake School conference opener is scheduled for Monday, April 18th. The Bears will play Minnehaha Academy at 3:40 pm weather permitting at Hiawatha Golf course. All home matches are played at Minikahda Country Club.
