2004-2005 Boys' Basketball Preview

2004-05 should prove to be an interesting rebuilding year for the Blake Bears boys’ basketball team. Gone to graduation are most of the Bears front line and big men off the bench. Head varsity coach Dan Yesnes assesses the start of the 04-05 season as follows, “We are looking to a few of our younger players to improve and contribute right away. Blake Williams (sophomore) and tri-captains Eric Bjerke (senior), and Michael Cathcart (junior) will be important to our anticipated successes. Guard Isaac Anderson (junior) could be a real sleeper, with a tremendous upside.”

Coach Yesnes is in his 5th as at the helm of the Blake varsity Bears. Not only is Yesnes rebuilding his team’s front line he is re-tooling his coaching staff. Nick Rathmann has been promoted to varsity assistant (last season's freshmen coach). Rathmann has proven to be a highly skilled, enthusiastic and committed coach. New to The Blake School from a three year stint at North Central University is Caleb Sieh. Sieh coach the Bear’s JV team. Jeff Alden-Pope will steer the freshmen program. This is Alden-Pope’s first year at The Blake School where he serves as Co-Coordinator of Diversity. A parent volunteer, Ralph Hargrow, who has a lot of experience in coaching basketball, will assist Alden-Pope. Hargrow brings his own personal basketball experience as a DI player to the benefit the entire Blake program.

Freshman coach Jeff Alden-Pope appraises his position as follows, “We look forward to helping these young men learn the game, good sportsmanship, and have fun when competing this year. Every player will get some work in the games this season to prepare them for JV and Varsity levels. "

All in all, the Bears hope to hit the hardwood running. Yesnes and his reorganized staff are looking forward to their team improving week by week and hope to surprise and challenge their opponents with a hard working and focused basketball squad.
