The Blake School senior Andy Cohen has committed to attend Middlebury College located in Middlebury, Vermont and play baseball for the Panthers. Middlebury is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), a NCAA Division III conference. The Panthers posted a 26 and 11 record.
Bob Smith enters his twenty-second season at the helm of the Middlebury program and twenty-seventh as a staff member. Smith also serves as director of club sports and the intramural programs at Middlebury.
In the spring of '06, Smith led the team to its most successful season in school history. The team made its first NESCAC Tournament appearance, winning the title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history and set a new school mark with 26 wins. For the exceptional season, Coach Smith was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year.
Smith is a 1972 graduate of the University of Delaware and his previous coaching experience includes stints at the University of Maine, Maine Maritime Academy and Gettysburg before arriving at Middlebury in 1979.
Of his college selection Andy reflects, "Throughout the arduous college visitation process, complete with all of the typical tours, interviews, and information sessions, I had an opportunity to meet with a lot of coaches to try to find the right fit for college ball. After touring the amazing facilities at Middlebury and hearing many of Coach Smith's philosophies on baseball, I knew that his coaching style, knowledge of the game, and approach to the balance between baseball and academics would be the perfect match for me. As an added bonus, I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play for this year's defending NESCAC champions!"
Andy anchored the 2006 Bears infield, which committed the fewest number of errors of any Blake team in the last 28 years, while turning 14 double plays.
Captain Andy Cohen and the 2007 Bears are off to a 2 and 0 start for the 2007 season topping rivals Breck and Saint Paul Academy and Summit School.
