Every second counts at high school skiing meets. Just ask the Blake boys' Alpine ski team.
The Bears were looking to defend their 2006 state championship. When all the results were in and tabulated, they had just enough points to clip Minnetonka for their second straight state title.
While things turned out well in the end, the Bears didn't exactly take a smooth path to the championship.
When the Bears' best skier - sophomore Michael Ankeny - made a mistake on his first run, the door was open for another team to steal the meet.
But the Bears' remaining skiers proved how valuable depth can be to a team, as they guided the squad to the championship.
Sophomore Marc Massie clocked in at 32.93 seconds on his first run and 32.06 seconds on his second run to finish in second place.
Senior Peter Ankeny - the brother of Michael Ankeny - placed fourth, while senior Jason Briggs placed 10th.
After a first run of 40.91 seconds, Michael Ankeny posted the best time of the day - 30.77 seconds - on his second run to finish in 15th place.
Minnetonka - which finished two points behind Blake in the team standings - was led by sophomore Tucker Hurrelbrink and senior C.J. Johnston who placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the individual competition, Michael Ankeny had two solid runs of 32.59 seconds and 31.25 seconds to take first place.
Massie and Peter Ankeny also placed in the top 10 with third- and sixth-place finishes. C.J. Johnson placed 14th, while Minnetonka junior Connor Johnson placed 16th. Wayzata sophomore Dustin Akerman placed 18th.
In the girls' individual competition, Benilde-St. Margaret's sophomore Andrea Radke placed fourth.
