Young Alpine Bears Win State Title, Sixth Place


The Blake School’s boys’ Alpine ski team, lead by Peter and Michael Ankeny, took top honors at the 2006 State Meet in Biwabik, MN. Michael, a freshman won the battle of the Ankeny family and Peter a junior was a close runner up. The Ankeny boys were first and third place, respectively while close behind in fifth place was freshman Marc Massie. The rest of the Blake squad was senior Neal McKinley in 13th place, junior Jason Briggs in 17th place and sophomore Robby Gagne in 31st.

Bob Teslow has served as The Blake School’s head Alpine ski coach for the last 33 years. Teslow’s Bears have been in four consecutive State Meets and have annually improved their performances. The Bears were the 2003 eighth place team, 2004’s sixth place finisher, the 2005 State runners-up and Champions of 2006. The Blake School last won it all in 1978.

The Blake School’s Girls team also earned their way to Biwabik and finished sixth in the State Meet. The Blake girls have earned their way to State in 3 of the last 4 years scoring a 4th place finish in 2005 and a 5th in 2003.

The 2006 team was lead by the steady skiing of senior Liz Perkins who finished in 12th place with a combined time of 01:17.9. Seventh grader Maisie Ide earned 20th position, eighth grader Hayden Broberg 24th and junior Janet Davido skied to 34th place. Sophomores Maggie Scholz and Annie O'Leary notched 39th and 42nd, respectively.
