Point of view changes everything. When I look at this photograph, I see in my mind’s eye not only the wide, green expanse of the pastures behind my house, but also my green basement door, open behind me onto the walkout beneath the porch off the kitchen. I feel the frigid air I let into the house, a sacrifice for the perfect shot. And I know my pony Erica, a dark shape hidden against the trees, sees something different entirely. A camera only captures one point of view - my own. But the photograph it produces opens up the viewer’s eyes to a world of possible points of view, from that of the pony in the pasture to that of the cat looking out the open door, wondering why that little black box is worth so much cold air in the basement.
