Never Dies
Screen print on textile; Ink on textile
I printed Malik because he is a significant person to me. Malik Sealy played basketball for the Minnesota Timberwolves, and was not only a great player, but also a great citizen. He volunteered his time on and off the court. He worked with the younger players and took all-star Kevin Garnett under his wing. Malik died on the way home from K.G.’s birthday party in 2000. I do this print in honor of Malik. I watched all his games and he was my favorite player. Ever since his death I have worn number two, Malik’s number. To do this print, I cut out a rubylith cut of a picture I got off the Internet. I used velum paper and left the body of Malik covered in rubylith so that it would print the color I wanted. I chose black because this is not meant to be a happy print. Death is never a happy thing, you can make the most of it by embracing the memories you remember, but nonetheless, black seemed right. In my print, I decided to leave certain areas of negative space (in the space of his live strong, in the timberwolves logos on the shorts) to balance the print out, and to not make it dark and sad. I will always remember Malik.
