Shwank It
Black and White Silver Print

I took this picture in my front yard while searching successfully for interesting things. I was focusing mostly on shadows for this assignment, and also nature. As I skimmed through the grass of my home on a dim day I ran into this image. I looked at it, and thought nothing of it. I moved on thinking, why would I want a picture of grass, yet at the same time the image stayed present in my mind. I could not understand it at all, I saw nothing in it, yet it stayed with me. I went back to the area and just stared. Then I saw it. The two light areas represented eyes, and a blurred smile was there too. I thought, wow, a smiley face, but how is this at all significant? I mean sure, it shows me that I should keep a positive outlook on life, but most smiles do that anyway. I dug a little deeper, could this possibly be telling me to keep a smile on my face? It would make sense, because this picture brought great joy to me, so maybe this picture is telling me to give random acquaintances a smile, because I will surely brighten up there day. In the end I decided that smiles were more powerful than I had known, and that to give someone a smile could impact them more than the giver would ever be able to know. I had to take this picture after thinking about all of this, so I did, and in doing so I also realized it had a great contrast of lights and darks, and a good balance by use of rule of thirds. The object blended it, yet stood out like a sore thumb to me. Maybe paying attention can lead to lessons learned.
