Flames
Black and White Silver Print
I took this photo with the intent to capture the motion of the flames on my sidewalk. I had been experimenting with the motion of fire in the wind, and decide to see that it would look like on a slightly larger scale. As with my previous fire photos, it caught the light of the fire better than its motion, but the affect was still interesting. Because of the high contrast, the shape of the light has become barely recognizable as fire, giving the print an almost surreal appearance. I created the image by lighting a camp fuel fire on my sidewalk, and then taking a very long exposure (1 full second) of the scene, with the camera on a tripod to prevent blur. The actual photo came out darker than I expected, so it required a longer exposure in the darkroom. I also used a high contrast filter of 4.5 to increase the effect of the flames. The resulting image showed the both the photographic themes of texture (in the grass) and value (from the light of the flames).
