night Café
Black and White Silver Print

I shot this photo as part of an assignment using a Holga toy camera. The camera was limiting in adjustments for focus and aperture, but it was very easy to use for multiple exposures and bulb shots, or extended exposures. This made it perfect for night shots, which were my main focus on my second role of film. I shot several bulb photographs of cars driving by on the corners of my block, and focused on this café for 2 of the photos. The outdoor lighting, the shadow along the side of the building, and the couple talking outside made it an interesting subject, which would have been much harder to capture with my regular camera. My exposure time for the shot was almost a minute, but because the lighting and the people remained mostly still, they are all in relatively clear focus. The couple’s dog, however, cannot be seen because it continued to walk around the table. One of the most important parts of this shot to me was the shadow along the left side o the building, which was caused by the lighting on a statue outside of the frame. I had to dodge my print to include the shadow, but I wanted to make sure to include some of it because of its interesting shape. The final print is square because of the format of the camera and the 120mm film which it used.
