The assignment was to photograph things in motion using a panning technique that caused the object in the forefront to be in clear focus while the background was blurred as a result of the motion. The background is very slightly blurred in this picture, but the car was moving too slowly for the motion to have a pronounced visual effect on the background.
I took this roll sitting on the front steps of Blake, pointing a camera at passing cars. I chose to print this picture because it showed the most detail in lights and darks. The shadow of the tree over the car is particularly striking and is the reason for the title of the piece.
