Bird
Black and White Silver Print

The assignment for this photograph was to shoot from the hip; that is, without looking through the viewfinder. It was taken behind the library when we went out as a class to shoot. When I took the photograph, I thought the clear subject was the bird sitting on the wall; that subject is far less clear in the actual photograph, because my zoom was at to the widest possible setting. It's possible to see things far beyond the small area of the bird, such as the car to the left and the lamppost up above, which lends completeness to the image. The main feature of this photograph is perspective-it's possible to see quite easily how parallel lines converge to a single point, and because of the low F-stop used, it's also possible to see detail both close to and far from the camera. This photograph displays the best detail in lights and darks that I have accomplished this semester, especially in the shadows on the surface of the wall.
