Spout
Black and White Silver Print

I took this picture outside my aunt's house in California. I was originally trying to capture a large drop that was falling from the upper lip of the spout, not the spout itself, but the drop fell just before I snapped the picture, and did not appear in the photograph.

I decided to print this picture in part because all of my pictures were oversaturated (I had not mastered the use of a light-meter) and this one had the strongest lights and darks. I wanted to display tonal range, and the high contrast between the white of the spout and the black of the background in this picture worked well for that goal.

Printing was challenging because I made a number of small mistakes that set me back a day or two in the process. When I finally did get a print, I discovered parts of the picture that I hadn't been aware of—objects in the background—because they hadn't shown up in the negative or on the contact sheet.

On the whole, I'm pleased with this picture because it represents depth and tonal range.
