Hive
Photogram: Black and White Silver Print

I created this photogram using a paper-folding technique taught to me by my grandmother. The paper is folded, cut in a special way, unfolded, stretched, and there are enough slits in the paper that they open when stretched. They form hexagonal shapes, so that the effect is a hive (hence the letters). But I only did this because I believed the effect would catch the eye. I find this fact dissatisfying: The creator's intent, at least where I am concerned, is irreconcilable with the dignity and symbolism of the art. One might say the art is a farce, because whereas I am only looking to create something that "looks cool," my art may claim that it has a purpose. I am like Thomas Jefferson's unwise watchmaker: I create the watch for all the wrong reasons, wind it, and set it flying.
