Site Specific Sculptures
After studying the glasswork of Dale Chihuly that was installed in Venice, students found a place in the school that inspires them and created a work of art specifically for that space. The artwork could comment on the space, highlight something about the space, change the way people interact with the space, and more. The Middle School hallways had surprises around every corner with the completion of this unit!
Ceramic Bowls
After discovering the technology and science behind ceramics, students designed a bowl incorporating pinch, coil, and/or slab techniques with an emphasis on surface decoration, craftsmanship, and proper attachment.
Contemporary Culture Ceramic Masks
This mask served as a visual identity symbol as students explored themselves in the context of their culture. Use of symbolism and solid design concepts was be emphasized, as well as an application of knowledge from research on mask creation in cultures around the world. What can masks tell us about the people or culture that created them? What might not be said? What do we have to be careful of in this thinking?
Artist Trading Cards
As a warm-exercise in the first trimester, students designed three artist trading cards and traded artwork with their classmates!
