Middle School Visual Arts
Grade 6

Collaborative Installations
The second trimester began with students learning about the elements of art and the principles of design. These elements and principles serve as a common vocabulary base that students can use to professionally write or talk about their observations of any work of art they encounter. Students also explored color theory and color vocabulary to discover how artists think about color as a tool. Drawing inspiration from the installation artist Liz Miller, students demonstrated their knowledge of elements of art, principles of design, and color theory by creating group wall installations. The collaborative art experience allowed students to pool their knowledge together and discover how artists work together to create a collective piece that is representative of the group's ideas.

Watercolor Illustration
The first trimester concluded with a unit on watercolor illustration and connecting literature with art. Students chose to illustrate a favorite written piece that they or someone else has composed. Students completed their illustration using professional watercolors. Emphasis was placed on watercolor vocabulary, techniques, and layering strategies.

Abstract Watercolor
Students composed a paragraph that included details from their experiences that morning, such as sights, sounds, smells, and emotions. Keeping these memories in mind, students completed an abstract painting to explore color and emotion in art.

Artist Trading Cards
As a warm-exercise in the first trimester, students designed three artist trading cards and traded artwork with their classmates!

Fabric Dyeing
The last day of class consisted of a t-shirt dyeing day, where students discovered how modern tie-dye originated.
