Third Grade Loony, Goony, Cartoony Birds

The third grade students do an extensive bird study and research paper in their classroom as part of their science curriculum. In art class we use this opportunity to look at different artists who used birds as their subject, specifically John James Audubon. After illustrating and watercolor painting the bird that they researched, we thought we would have some fun with designing a cartoon bird. We brainstormed a list of bird characteristics and decided that each cartoon bird should have at leat 4 of these characteristics. Exagerration was encouraged. Other than that, the sky was the limit and their imagination was free and clear to create a whimsical, playful bird.
