“Dear Mr. Gulla,
From the very first contact that we had, we knew we had made the right decision. The phone calls, the letters, the parent/student sponsors, the welcome [picnic] for new families, the intro to the homeroom small family teachers. All of it; amazing. And, it continues to go on! … I am so impressed with you and Blake that my heart is soaring like an eagle …”

ADMISSIONS

Getting to know one another

Two students with welcome sign

We encourage families to thoroughly investigate what we — as well as other schools — have to offer. The best way to begin this process is to visit.

Campus tours include time in the classrooms and are available by appointment throughout the school year. Additionally, open houses and information meetings provide time for prospective students and their families to meet teachers and administrators and discuss our curriculum and educational philosophy. Additional detailed information is available in Admissions Process; open house information is available in Admission Events.

If, after learning about us, you feel the Blake community is what you’re looking for, we invite you to begin the application process so we may become better acquainted.

Our admissions philosophy. The Blake School seeks to enroll students whose strong ability, performance and promise suggest they will thrive in the school’s challenging academic environment and who will contribute to the life of the school in a variety of areas including the arts, athletics, leadership and service. Students admitted to Blake and their families are expected to embrace the school’s mission statement and statement of community values.

Admissions decisions are based on a combination of factors, which may include a personal interview with the student and his or her parents, academic record, admissions tests, recommendations from teachers, a classroom visit and other appropriate information. Academic readiness or achievement, social and behavioral maturity, motivation and special talents will be considered. Composition of a given grade and the school as a whole, influence the decisions of individual student selection.

In the admissions process, Blake seeks to enroll a student body comprised of a balance among: children of families new to Blake, children of alumni/ae and siblings; gender; and diversity in race, religion, ethnicity and socioeconomic background. We believe this balance brings a breadth of perspective that enhances the learning experience for all and strengthens the whole school community.

In all cases, the school retains the right to determine, in its sole discretion, whether or not to admit or re-enroll a student. The Admissions Committee, working closely with Blake faculty and administration, makes the final decisions under the overall supervision of the head of school.

Value. The Blake School is committed to providing an outstanding education for its students. When considering various independent schools, it is important to note that Blake spends more dollars per student than any other school in the Twin Cities, yet we are not the most expensive school in the Cities. Only part of the cost of educating each student at Blake is covered by tuition. Additional resources come from both Blake’s Annual Fund and the school’s endowment, which bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating students. The commitment of parents and alumni to the Annual Fund is critical to our ability to meet this goal at the school.

Financial Aid. Blake offers financial aid grants and loans on the basis of demonstrated financial need as determined by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) and Blake’s Financial Aid Committee. There are no merit-based academic, artistic or athletic awards. All applications for financial aid are held in the strictest of confidence. If you are unsure whether or not to apply, we encourage your inquiry.

We recognize there are many variables involved in financing a Blake education and we understand this is a personal decision. We hope you will feel comfortable contacting us with any questions or concerns. Please call our Financial Aid Office at 952-988-3424.

“Dear John,
… We feel so fortunate to have our child in a school which has provided him not only an excellent education, but [also with] an outstanding support system in teachers, parents and peers. There has never been a “bad” year for [our son], every single teacher he has had throughout has been a positive experience for him from kindergarten to his current 10th grade. We’ve never had to remind him of how lucky he is, he tells us over and over again how happy he is at Blake. … ”
