The Admissions Process

Three students standing behind their desks

During the admissions process we seek to learn about the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each applicant. To this end, Blake's Admissions Office hosts open house events and provides tours allowing families to catch a glimpse of life at our school. Upon receipt of an application, our admissions process begins. We plan activities that are designed to be informative and comfortable for parents and children, and to give Blake's admissions staff and faculty opportunities to know and appreciate those applying for admission.

Pre-K and K

Playgroups
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten playgroups consist of 8-12 children and 3-4 teachers who work and play together in a simulated classroom setting. During the playgroup time, parents meet with Lower School administrators to learn more about the School.

Screening
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten screening consists of child-friendly, game-like activities in a one-on-one setting. While your child is busy with these activities, parents are invited to have an interview with the admissions coordinator.

Grades 1-5

Classroom Visit
Applicants for grades 1 through 5 are invited to Lower School to spend a day with a student host visiting a classroom in their current grade level. Your child will meet students in the class, and get a feel for the academics, arts and athletics at Blake.

Screening
In addition to the careful review of teacher recommendations and progress reports, age-appropriate screening and/or standardized testing are a part of our admissions process. During these scheduled times parents will meet for an interview with the admissions coordinator.

Grades 6-12

Grade Visit
Applicants for Middle and Upper School are invited to spend a day at Blake. This provides an opportunity to share in an active day of classes, and to learn about Blake’s arts, athletics, and extra-curricular programs. Prospective students will also meet with the admissions coordinator during their visit to the School.

Standardized Testing
In addition to the careful review of teacher recommendations and academic transcripts, standardized testing is required of each applicant. A parent interview with the admissions coordinators for these grades is scheduled by appointment.

A note about the Parent interview ...
Blake’s admissions coordinators are eager to learn about the uniqueness of each applicant. The interview between parents and the appropriate coordinator is a relaxed conversation about your child. It is also an opportunity for us to answer your questions and make sure you are clear about Blake's mission and values. We look forward to this time together!

Before considering applying to Blake, we encourage families to thoroughly investigate what we, as well as other schools, have to offer. The best way to begin this process is to visit our School. Campus tours of Blake include time in classrooms and are available by appointment throughout the year. To schedule your tour, please contact Carolyn Bloom at 952-988-3420 or cbloom@blakeschool.org.

Additionally, our open houses and informational meetings provide time for prospective students and their families to meet teachers and administrators and to discuss curriculum and educational philosophies.

If, after learning about us, you feel that the Blake community is what you're looking for, we invite you to begin the application process so we may become better acquainted with one another.
