About the Library/Media Center
|
What sort of material is available in the library/media center?
We have a collection of about 13,000 items. Most are books, but we also have about 1,500 videos. We subscribe to over 50 magazines and newspapers as well as subscribing to databases that provide access to news and magazine article archives along with other resources. The library also has a copy machine, and office supplies which may be used in the room.
The Walk-in and Classroom labs have desktop computers that may be used when not reserved for classes. The library also stores 32 laptop computers that can be reserved for classes or used in the library if the desktop labs are not available.
When is the library/media center open?
The library/media center is open from 7 am to 4 pm every school day. The library and computer labs are not available during assembly or at times when all students are expected to be in other meetings.
If you wish to come to the library from a study hall, you must have a note from a classroom teacher indicating that you need to use the library for an assignment, and give that note to your study hall proctor, who can then give you permission to come to the library. The library and media staff cannot directly excuse you from study hall.
Students may not be in the library/media area if there are no staff members available to supervise the space. A member of the library/media staff may be able to stay later than 4 pm on occasion - however, this favor depends on individual schedules and other obligations, and should not be assumed. If you think you will need to stay late to finish a specific project, please check with the library/media staff as soon as possible, to see what the options are - don't wait to ask until 3:45.
Who can help me with a question?
Mr. Sherfey and Ms. Arnott are responsible for the library and the library laptop computers. They can both help with finding books, using the library catalog, checking out books or other material, and with research or other questions. Their desks are in and just outside the library office, behind the circulation desk.
Mr. Hill is responsible for the audiovisual and multimedia equipment around the school. His office is in the multimedia lab - Room 280. This is not a general computer lab - this room is reserved for classes and projects requiring the multimedia equipment.
Mr. Hofius is responsible for both the classroom and walk-in labs. His desk is in the classroom lab (room 278). He can help you with any computer problems, or with learning more about specific software.
How do I find books and other materials?
The library has four catalog terminals on an island near the circulation desk and reference shelves. If you need help using the catalog system, please ask Mr. Sherfey or Mr. Arnott. Signs at the top of each set of shelves give the specific numbers shelved there. A basic map of the library is also posted near the catalog computers. The library catalog is also available on any school network computer.
The library can request materials from other libraries through the interlibrary loan service for specific projects. There are some additional rules and procedures that go along with this - please talk to Ms. Arnott to learn more about how this service works.
Can I suggest a book or video I think the library might want to buy?
Yes, please! If you have a book or other item you think would be appropriate to add to the library, please talk to Mr. Sherfey or Ms. Arnott. We're particularly interested in suggestions for fiction or pleasure reading books.
How do I check out a book? What about AV equipment?
Find the book you would like to check out, and talk to Mr. Sherfey or Ms. Arnott. They will check the book out for you. To check out AV equipment, talk to Mr. Hill.
How long can I check out books for?
Books circulate for two weeks for students. Videos can be checked out for two days. Reference books do not circulate. Books are due on the first school day after the due date, if you take books out over weekends or vacations. Items can generally be renewed.
Are there fines if I return a book late?
No, we do not charge fines for late books. We do send out overdue notices to your homeroom every two weeks.
At the end of each semester, we send out more frequent notices, and will bill your account just after the end of the semester for any materials that have not been returned at that time.
Can we check out laptops?
Yes, sometimes. Classes have priority use of the laptops. Individual students may not use library laptops outside the library, and may only use laptops in the library if both desktop labs are unavailable.
Can we eat and drink in the library?
Sorry, no. Due to spills and crumbs, no food or drink is allowed in the library, or in the computer labs. You can leave bottles outside the library, or place them in your bag.
I forgot my password for the computer. Can you change it?
Mr. Hofius is responsible for changing passwords. They are changed once a day, after school. You will need to tell us your username, your year of graduation, and which password needs to be changed (email or chooser/web).
