USING THE INTERNET

SEARCH ENGINES
There are many search engines available on the Internet today. These fall into three main categories, which access and list results in slightly different ways.
  • General Search Engines - General search engines gather and sort information from websites all over the Internet. When you enter a search term, the engine accesses its lists and returns results in the form of a list. Google, for example, has a registry of over 3 billion websites.
  • Metaindexes - Metaindexes access a number of general search engines to find results for your search term(s). They then list the top results from each for your topic.
  • Category Searches - Category indexes are built like "information trees," taking broad subject areas and narrowing them into smaller and more specific topics. A category index is useful when you don't know exactly what terms to use to search your topic. Simply click on a subject area (like Entertainment, Science, or Regional). Then choose from a list of more specific topics within that subject.
