Math 8
Course Syllabus
2007-2008

The Math 8 course in the middle school prepare students for an algebra course in the high school. The purpose of this course is to review pre-algebra topics as well as introduce the student to the basic principles of algebra and geometry. The content is presented in an interactive format-students are expected to take an active role in their mathematics education. I am very excited to be teaching this course this year: I am looking forward to exploring many mathematical concepts in depth and helping each student reach his/her mathematical potential!

Teacher: Paula Sadler psadler@blakeschool.org

Textbook: Saxon: Algebra ½, Connect Mathematics Program (various books)

Topics
Pre-Algebra and skills review (on-going)

First Semester:
Linear Functions and Graphing
Tools of Algebra
Spatial thinking
Right Angles in Algebra
Data Analysis and Probability

Second Semester
Area and Volume
Nonlinear functions and graphing
Exponential functions
Equalities and Inequalities
Graphing and writing linear equations

Supplies: All students are expected to keep a separate notebook for math. Notebooks are collected every few weeks and are graded to assess organizational skills. The notebook contains sections for classnotes, class work, and vocabulary. These are resources that students will use on a daily basis. The notebooks can also be used on quizzes. Students are also expected to be prepared with all homework done on the day it is due.

Classwork/homework: Homework is an extension of classwork or practice/extension of concepts learned in class. Homework is assigned to average about 25 minutes per school night. Students will be completing an at-home skills review each week (due on Tuesdays) as well as other short homework assignments based on classwork. Notebooks will be collected on the day of the Unit Test. All homework assignments can be found on Moodle.

Quizzes: Students will be given a quiz approximately once a week based on homework/classwork from the previous week. Students may use all homework, classnotes, and their notebook on these quizzes. Although a small part of the overall grade, these quizzes are a good opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning.

Chapter tests: Chapter tests will be given at the end of each unit to monitor ongoing progress. Students will also have a comprehensive exam at the end of the year. As this will be most student's first experience with a cumulative exam, class time will be devoted to exam preparation.

Grades: Grades will be based 75% on unit tests and projects, 15% on quizzes, and 10% on homework/classwork. Interim reports (midpoint of the quarter) will keep parents informed if students are not making maintaining a grade of C or better, or if there are other concerns about student progress.

Alternative assessment: Portfolios, notebooks, projects, student's self assessment and observation will be used to ensure that each student reaches his/her mathematical ability.

Extra help: Extra help is available during tutorial Monday-Thursday. Students should sign up with me and on the tutorial sign out board to attend this help session. Students may be asked to attend this session if they are missing homework and/or are struggling with a concept. Other times for extra help can be arranged as needed (lunch or before/after school).

Instructional Technology: Ti-84 Graphing calculators will be used on a regular basis, but students do not have to purchase their own calculators. We will also be using Geometer Sketchpad, an interactive and dynamic graphing software program which will be used to reinforce concepts that are explored in class.
