Middle School Science Objectives


The science courses aim to provide students with a deep understanding of science as a process of inquiry with an emphasis on teaching experimental methods in the context of earth, life and the physical sciences.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Content

    The student will:
    1. Learn evidence-based reasoning and experimental methods.
    2. Develop scientific concepts required to gain a better understanding of real world issues involving health, energy and the environment.
  2. Attitudes

    The student will have the opportunity to develop:
    1. New ideas about the natural world.
    2. Confidence in one's ability to "do science".
    3. Awareness and a sense of responsibility towards both local and global environmental issues.
    4. Appreciation for the important roles played by science in understanding our world.
  3. Skills

    The student will:
    1. Work as a team
    2. Identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigations.
    3. Design and conduct scientific investigations.
    4. Use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze and interpret data.
    5. Develop descriptions, explanations, predictions and models using evidence.
    6. Think critically and logically to understand the relationship between evidence and explanations.
    7. Learn to recognize and analyze alternative explanations and predictions.
    8. Communicate scientific procedures and explanations.

    The student will:
    1. Use a computer connected to probes and sensors to collect data.
    2. Use a computer to store, organize and share the results of their investigations.
    3. Conduct an effective internet search for reliable scientific information.
