The Sixth Grade Curriculum-Trimester (twelve weeks, class meets twice a week for 50 minutes)
The trimester will begin with students learning about the major art movements of the 2oth century and exploring the concept of style. After students receive instruction on drawing facial proportions, they will draw a self portrait and paint it in tempera using defining characteristics of a major style of the 20th century. Students will explore color theory, color vocabulary, and paint mixing techniques to use in this portrait painting and to transition into their second major project.
Sketchbooks will require the exploration of the Elements and Principles of Art so that the finished sketchbook acts as a resource for these terms. Students will collect examples of the Elements and Principles, will apply their knowledge to draw their own example of each element and principle, and will further apply their knowledge to talk/write about artwork using this vocabulary.
The second major project will focus on Illustration and connecting literature with art. Students will choose to illustrate a favorite written piece that they or someone else has composed. A visiting artist will talk about Illustration techniques, and students will complete their illustration using professional watercolors. Emphasis will be placed on watercolor vocabulary, techniques, and layering strategies. As a warm-up to this Illustration painting, students will complete a smaller abstract painting to explore color and emotion in art.
Homework will include sketchbook assignments dealing with the Elements and Principles of Art and written reactions/reflections on student's own work and the work of others. Homework and projects are expected to be in on time and finished with care. Use of Tutorial time is encouraged for extra help with studio projects.
