Lower School MicroWorlds Programming Projects
Seymour Papert developed the Logo language. Papert holds the LEGO Chair for Learning Research at M.I.T. During his thirty-year career Papert has woven together the study of children's thinking, mathematics and computers. He has received many national and international awards for his creation of the computer language and for his pioneering work in changing the computer's role in education from rote learning to a medium for creative development
The Blake School programming curriculum is spiraled and impacts students in all grades of the Lower School. It is an innovative approach that engages young children in exploration activities that are both challenging and rewarding. This curriculum provides us ways to successfully integrate science, math and technology into the classroom and to afford opportunities for early success, thus getting students started on the right foot in science and technology.
The Logo language is introduced to all students at The Blake School starting in kindergarten. One piece of software used is MicroWorlds JR. MicroWorlds JR is easy to learn and to use. It gives students an opportunity control or program objects in a student created environment. This software encourages children to explore mathematical and other "big" ideas, such as number, geometry, patterns and movement.
Older students use MicroWorlds EX to explore and test their ideas. MicroWorlds EX programming affords students the opportunity to develop graphics, music, animation, science simulations and mathematical experiments. Many topics are covered including: interactive stories, multimedia presentations and games.
MicroWorlds EX-Robotics Edition is a Logo-based curriculum construction kit with all the features of MicroWorlds EX plus full programming capabilities for the LEGO RCX Brick. EX Robotics fosters the development of problem-solving strategies, critical thinking skills and creativity.
You will need a MicroWorlds plug-in to view the presentations. The latest plug-in may be downloaded from the MicroWorlds Web site in Macintosh and Windows formats.
