2006-2007 Build a Better House Projects
|
First grade students spend some time in the Engineering and Programming lab developing their natural talents to cooperate with others, solve problems and express their thoughts and ideas. One way that first graders develop these talents is to try to build a better house using LEGO kit 5477.
During this investigation students have the opportunity to explore a variety of possible outcomes, as opposed to delivering one predetermined result. This freedom to explore new variables greatly enhances student motivation and understanding.
Many years of experience have taught us the effectiveness of learning by actually building something. When children actively construct things in the physical world it helps them to build knowledge in their minds. Hands-on experiences allow children to use their body-kinesthetic skills and spatial intelligence.
These activities are designed to capitalize on students' natural curiosity and enthusiasm about the world around them and there is little more fun or satisfying than making something beautiful with your own two hands and that is what LEGO building is all about.
